Platycerium 'Horn's Surprise' is a chance hybrid (P. madagascariense × P. alcicorne) that turned up as a volunteer seedling in the late Jerry Horne's Florida nursery — hence the name. It combines the wavy, deeply-textured shield fronds that make madagascariense so prized with the vigorous, easy-going growth habit of alcicorne, making it a noticeably more forgiving grower than straight madagascariense while keeping a lot of its striking foliage character.
